Module 1 – Introduction

Welcome to the Sign Linguistics Website of the Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies (CSLDS), the Chinese University of Hong Kong. CSLDS was established in 2003 (http://www.cslds.org/). Since its establishment, CSLDS has been receiving generous funding from the Nippon Foundation to promote sign linguistics as an academic discipline in the Asia-Pacific Region. Providing post-secondary training to the potential Deaf and hearing researchers is one of our goals (http://www.cslds.org/apsl/).

This website is created to introduce basic concepts in sign linguistics for individuals who are interested in learning about the linguistic analysis of sign language data. The website content will be presented in different combinations of written languages and sign languages. You can see the available languages at the top of the website. More Asian languages will be added as we continue to develop our website. The number of linguistic modules will increase gradually as well.

This website is not meant to replace formal, systematic training in sign linguistics at the post-secondary level. If you find the content of this website interesting, you are highly recommended to read introductory texts on sign linguistics or the relevant research articles, and to enroll yourself in sign linguistic courses offered by accredited tertiary institutions.
