Visit to Guangzhou Deaf School

Date: 26/11/2014

At the invitation of Mrs. Ma Li, the principal of Guangzhou Deaf School, Professor Tang and Mr. Chris Yiu paid a visit to that school on 28th November, 2014.

During the visit, the vice principal Mrs. Zhong first introduced the history of the school, the current development as well as the achievement of the students. The school offers education from the level of kindergarten to high school. In total, there are 403 deaf and hard of hearing students in the school. Although the school is using spoken language as main teaching language, it also values the importance of sign language and wants to promote the sign bilingual and co-enrollment education, just like the SLCO programme established by the center. Prof. Tang and Mr. Yiu shared the experience of developing bilingual deaf education in mainstream schools in Hong Kong enthusiastically and offered some suggestions to the school.

In the end the both sides expressed their wills to cooperate together to promote sign bilingual deaf education in Mainland China.
