Date: 27/01/2015 - 29/01/2015

On January 27th to 29th 2015, the Centre together with the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, the Department of Electronic Engineering CUHK offered a training programme named Interdisciplinary Foundation Courses in Communication and Language Disorder Treatment in the Shenzhen Research Institute of CUHK. The Vice Principle of CUHK Shenzhen--Professor Luo Zhiquan attended the opening ceremony according to whom training or research programmes are highly welcome and of great importance.

This four-day training programme covered knowledge of linguistics, speech signal processing as well as speech and language therapy. More than 40 teachers, speech therapists and parents from Mainland China participated in the course and gave positive feedbacks about the contents as well as the instructors.

During the morning of the first day, Professor Gladys and two research assistants-- Miss. Li Qun and Miss. Hu Yunyi gave a lecture on foundation theories of linguistics. A systematic introduction to linguistics which contains phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics clearly renovated students’ understanding of language and language in use. After the lecture, many students indicated that having a good command of linguistic theory is the precondition of conducting effective treatment and they would put the concepts which they learned in the lecture into practice. Additionally, they also wish to have more training programmes like this.

The Centre is very glad to share our experience in linguistic researches as well as deaf studies with a larger population in the hope of helping the society offer better children who are in need.
