Public talk on Language Development and Communication Methods of Deaf and Hard-of-hearing children in Shenzhen Children"s Hospital

Prof. Gladys Tang, Prof. Scholastica Lam and Mr. Chris Yiu gave a public talk on Nov. 2nd, 2013, in Shenzhen Children"s Hospital, Shenzhen, China. This talk was organized by the Research and Technology Centre of Language and Communication Disorder, Shenzhen Research Institute, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and was co-organized by Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies and also Shenzhen Children"s Hospital.

This 3-hour talk aimed at introducing research findings on language development of deaf and hard-of-hearing children, and the speakers also discussed different communication methods that may help d/hh children develop their language ability. Prof. Gladys Tang first talked about the language development of d/hh children. Prof. Scholastica Lam then introduced the bilingual development of d/hh children. Finally, Mr. Chris Yiu discussed the education models for d/hh children, and shared the practice of Jockey Club Sign Bilingualism and Co-enrolment in Deaf Education Programme in Hong Kong.

Approximately 120 people attended the talk, and most of them are parents of d/hh children, medical workers, speech therapists and teachers. The talk was well received by the audience.
