On 29 December, 2015, Prof. Gladys Tang attended an evaluation meeting of a national project (國家手語和盲文規範化行動計劃) conducted by the National Centre for Sign Language and Braille of Beijing Normal University. In this 5-year project (2011-2015), the research team attempted to collect natural sign language data of Chinese Sign Language from different regions of China. The evaluation meeting was followed by a press conference during which a government policy paper was issued. The policy paper reflects the government’s efforts to adopt a common variety of sign language in China. To achieve this goal, the government lists a number of measures, in particular, establishment of disciplinary training in sign linguistics at the postgraduate level in China, to support the future development of sign interpretation, sign language assessment, and deaf education.
