Participating in Sign Language Database Development Workshop

The Asian SignBank is a sign language database developed within the centre’s Asia Pacific Sign Linguistics Research and Training Program (APSL). Mr. Cheng Ka Yiu, one of the database developers and the assistant computer officer of the centre, was invited to join the Sign Language Database Development Workshop held in Beijing on 9 Nov 2014. During the workshop, Mr. Cheng introduced the functions of the Asian SignBank, the design framework of the system, the methods of analyzing sign features, and he also shared his experience in developing the Asian SignBank. Representatives from the National Center for Sign Language and Braille, the Institute of Applied Linguistics Ministry of Education, Nanjing Technical College of Special Education, and Beijing Union University introduced their own sign language research and sign language database development. They all agreed that the development of sign language databases requires strong cooperation between different parties, and follow-up research meetings should be held in the future.
