2012 Summer International Conference on Teaching Research and Experience Sharing of SigAm Bilingual Bicultural Deaf Education Project in Western China

Prof. Scholastica Wai Sze Lam of the centre, Ms Rebecca Ng, vice principal of Kowloon Bay St. John the Baptist Catholic Primary School (which is the partner school of the Jockey Club Sign Bilingualism and Co-enrolment in Deaf Education (JC-SLCO) Programme), two Deaf teachers from the same school, Mr Leung Sing Song and Ms Joyce Chung Sze Pun, and a research staff were invited to attend the conference held in Sichuan, China, from 30 July – 2 Aug. This conference consisted of two sessions, a teaching research and experience sharing session, and a deaf teacher training session. A lot of headmasters and deaf and hearing teachers of bilingual bicultural programmes in Sichuan, Guizhou, Jiangsu, and Norway took part in the conference. Researchers of deaf education and sign linguistics were invited to give lectures. Prof. Lam was among them and made a presentation on Sign Linguistics Research: From Theory to Practice. She discussed some sign linguistics research and introduced the theoretical background, direction, and development of the JC-SLCO Programme. In addition, Ms Ng gave a detailed introduction on the operation of the JC-SLCO programme to the deaf teachers from Norway who showed great interest in it. Mr Song and Ms Pun also joined the deaf teacher training session and shared their teaching experience and methodology with other participating teachers.
