Diploma Programme in Basic Sign Language Lexicography for the Deaf

Objectives

The objectives for this Programme are:

  1. To introduce basic sign linguistic concepts by providing training on the skills for compiling sign language dictionaries.
  2. To raise educational opportunities for young and talented deaf adults.

Programme Structure

The Programme is a full-time four months programme, consisting of five modules.

The five modules and their outlines are listed as follows:

  • Module 1 – Hong Kong Sign Language I
    • This course adopts an interactive approach, where learners are systematically guided to acquire HKSL vocabulary and a set of simple sentence structures for effective communication.
    • Themes covered in this course will be self introduction, personal background, family, food and colours. The course will also teach basic grammar topics of HKSL including pronouns, compounds, wh-question, y/n question and non-manuals.
  • Module 2 – Formational Structure of Sign Languages
    • The course introduces the formational parameters of individual signs, including location, handshape, orientation, movement, and non-manual features. “Phonotactic” rules and common “phonological” processes and changes found in sign languages in general will also be discussed. Application of Stokoe and modified-Stokoe transcription symbols and practice in the transcription of signs will be outlined.
  • Module 3 – Sign Language Lexicography
    • The course will provide training on the theories and techniques on the production of sign language dictionaries. Specifically, students will be taught how to code the formational properties of individual signs, categorize signs according to their semantic/syntactic characteristics, and organize the sign entries basing on sign linguistic principles. Practical skills in producing photo images will be taught. Students will be required to practice what they learn from the lectures by producing dictionaries of their own sign languages as a long-term project.
  • Module 4 – Introduction to Sign Language Research
    • This course aims at providing training on the methodologies commonly used in conducting sign linguistic research. The topics that will be covered include selection of appropriate research informants, ways of eliciting data in experimental and natural conversation setting, techniques of videotaping and preparing sign language data for research purposes, means of transcribing sign language data, etc.
  • Module 5 – Basic English
    • This course is designed for deaf students with relatively no knowledge of English. Basic alphabet pattern and basic vocabulary will be taught. Emphasis will be placed on helping students to develop a reading habit in English so as to build a solid foundation for further training in English as well as other academic subjects.
