Press Conference: Announce the establishment of a study support system and scholarship in sign linguistics for deaf students from Asia, entirely funded by the Nippon Foundation

A press conference was held by the Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies on 12 February 2015 to announce the establishment of a study support system and scholarship in sign linguistics for deaf students from Asia, entirely funded by the Nippon Foundation.

The press conference was introduced by Prof. Sze Yim Binh, who described the sign interpretation and note-taking system currently being provided to the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s first two signing deaf students, as well as the scholarships being offered for deaf students to study MPhil and PhD. Mr. Yasunobu Ishii, director of disability programs at the Nippon Foundation, also shared the Nippon Foundation’s motivations for providing funding for this program, expressing his hopes for increased opportunities for deaf people throughout Asia. Finally, CUHK’s current deaf students, Laura Lesmana Wijaya and Kenny Chu, shared some of their experiences from their first semester of study.
