Visiting Lecturer: Ms. Leala Holcomb

Date: 02/01/2014 - 30/04/2014

In January 2014, Ms. Leala Holcomb came to Hong Kong to teach at the Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies. Ms. Holcomb is a Deaf teacher and a passionate advocate for bilingual education for Deaf children; she obtained her B.A. in international education and development from Gallaudet University in 2009 and an M.S. in deaf education from National University in 2013. During her time with us, Ms. Holcomb taught the courses Social and Cognitive Development of Deaf Children as well as Deaf Identities and Deaf Cultures within the APSL higher diploma program.

The APSL students were impressed by Ms. Holcomb’s insights on deaf education and her interactive teaching style. APSL higher diploma student Aaron Wong commented “Leala incorporated so many examples into her teaching and even gave us opportunities to try different research and teaching methods.” Another APSL student, Daigo Isobe, said, “we learned about how teaching goals can be incorporated into games and activities to give deaf children a chance to develop their expressive skills.” The APSL program has benefitted greatly from Ms. Holcomb’s contributing her time and knowledge to our students here.
