Asian Sign Languages Booth at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Primary School

Date: 17/12/2011

On Saturday, December 17th, a fair was held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Primary School to celebrate the school’s golden anniversary. The APSL students took part in the fair by hosting a booth about Asian Pacific Sign Languages. In order to teach children attending the fair about their native sign languages, the APSL students designed a game in which players could learn how to sign a single word in five different sign languages: Japanese Sign Language, Sri Lankan Sign Language, Indonesian Sign Language, Fijian Sign Language and Hong Kong Sign Language. After learning each sign, the children received a stamp on their game card and were then given a small prize after getting all five stamps.

The event coordinator, Mayumi, a deaf APSL student from Japan, had this to say about the experience: “The children were interested in learning about the different sign languages, and they really seemed to enjoy learning from our diverse group of APSL students! It is good for the hearing children to learn about sign language when they are young so they can work together with deaf people in the future.”
